Platform comparisons

Platform comparison

MultiCharts vs NinjaTrader

Both are serious platforms for building and automating trading strategies, and BreakoutOS exports strategies to both. MultiCharts gives you a choice of brokers and an EasyLanguage-style language; NinjaTrader is built around futures. Here's an honest side-by-side.

The short answer

Which one should you use?

Choose MultiCharts if...

  • You want to choose your own broker and data feed
  • You already have EasyLanguage strategies
  • You want to backtest portfolios of strategies together

Choose NinjaTrader if...

  • You mainly trade futures
  • You're taking, or planning, a prop firm evaluation
  • You'd rather pay once for a lifetime license and lower commissions
At a glance

Three key differences.

Brokers and data

MultiCharts

Connects to many brokers and data feeds, including Interactive Brokers, Rithmic, CQG and TradeStation. No brokerage of its own.

NinjaTrader

Its own futures brokerage, with more than 100 contracts including micros. Other brokers and data feeds can connect too.

How you code a strategy

MultiCharts

PowerLanguage, which runs most EasyLanguage code. MultiCharts .NET uses C# or VB.NET instead.

NinjaTrader

NinjaScript (C#): a full programming language. Strategy Builder turns point-and-click conditions into NinjaScript.

Prop firms

MultiCharts

Some firms that run on Rithmic or CQG support it, depending on the firm and the account.

NinjaTrader

Supported by most futures prop firms, usually through a Rithmic, Tradovate or CQG connection.

Credit where it's due

Where each platform shines.

Where MultiCharts shines

  • Your broker, your data. Connect the broker and data feed you want, and change them later without changing platforms.
  • Portfolio Trader. On the Advanced plan, backtest and run many strategies across many symbols as one portfolio.
  • EasyLanguage friendly. Most EasyLanguage code imports straight into PowerLanguage, so existing strategies come with you.
  • Bar Magnifier. Replays each bar at tick or minute level, for more realistic fills in your backtests.

Where NinjaTrader shines

  • Futures first. The platform, the brokerage and the pricing are all built around futures traders, from micros up.
  • Prop firm friendly. If you want to trade a funded account, NinjaTrader is the platform most futures prop firms support.
  • Free to research. Charting, backtesting and simulated trading are free with no time limit, so you can build and test before you pay anything.
  • Pay once if you trade a lot. The Lifetime plan has the lowest commissions, which adds up for active futures traders.
Tested on both

One strategy, both platforms.

We built one breakout strategy in BreakoutOS, exported it as PowerLanguage and as NinjaScript, and backtested it on each platform. Both reproduced the BreakoutOS results closely.

What BreakoutOS adds to either platform.

MultiCharts and NinjaTrader both test and run the strategy you give them. BreakoutOS does the jobs around that, and the strategy you build moves with you if you ever switch.

Before you build

Breakout Radar and Market Mapper show which markets and sessions break out cleanly, and Breakout Trading PRO builds and tests thousands of breakout strategies in minutes, then exports the one you pick as PowerLanguage or NinjaScript.

After the backtest

The Backtest Auditor checks whether a result beats a thousand strategies with the same DNA, MQ Portfolio Builder combines strategies into one portfolio, and the Strategy Health Monitor tells you when a live strategy drifts outside its normal range.

Common questions

MultiCharts vs NinjaTrader questions.

Both trade futures well. NinjaTrader is built around them, with its own futures brokerage and support from most futures prop firms. MultiCharts suits futures traders who want to pick their own broker and data feed, or test portfolios of strategies.
NinjaTrader is free for charting, backtesting and simulation, then charges commissions on one of three plans (Free, $99 a month, or $1,499 once). MultiCharts has a free plan for simulation and backtesting, then charges for its Standard or Advanced plan by subscription or lifetime license, plus your broker's commissions and any data fees. Check both pricing pages for current figures.
Not directly. NinjaTrader runs NinjaScript (C#), so EasyLanguage strategies need rewriting. MultiCharts runs most EasyLanguage code as it is. BreakoutOS exports every strategy as both PowerLanguage and NinjaScript, so there's nothing to convert.
Fewer than support NinjaTrader. Some firms that run on Rithmic or CQG let you connect MultiCharts, depending on the firm and the account. Most futures prop firms support NinjaTrader. Check your firm's platform list before you pay for an evaluation.
MultiCharts. Its Portfolio Trader, on the Advanced plan, backtests several strategies across many symbols together. NinjaTrader's Strategy Analyzer tests one strategy at a time.
Not natively. MultiCharts is Windows only, so Mac users run it in a Windows virtual machine. NinjaTrader's web and mobile apps work on a Mac, and the desktop platform runs in a Windows virtual machine.
Yes. BreakoutOS exports every strategy as PowerLanguage and as NinjaScript. In our test, one NQ breakout strategy produced 410 trades in both MultiCharts and NinjaTrader, and 409 in BreakoutOS (hypothetical backtests).
