Platform comparisons

Platform comparison

NinjaTrader vs TradeStation

Both are serious platforms for building and automating trading strategies, and BreakoutOS exports strategies to both. The right one depends on what you trade, how you like to code and where you want to run it. Here's an honest side-by-side.

Checked against each platform's published information in November 2026. Prices and features change, so check their sites for the latest before you decide.

The short answer

Which one should you use?

Choose NinjaTrader if...

  • You mainly trade futures
  • You're taking, or planning, a prop firm evaluation
  • You'd rather pay once for a lifetime license and lower commissions

Choose TradeStation if...

  • You trade stocks and options as well as futures
  • You want to code in EasyLanguage
  • You scan hundreds of symbols at once
At a glance

Three key differences.

What you can trade

NinjaTrader

Built around futures: more than 100 contracts, including micro and crypto futures. Connect another broker for stocks or forex.

TradeStation

US stocks, ETFs, options, futures and futures options in one account.

How you code a strategy

NinjaTrader

NinjaScript (C#): a full programming language with more power and a steeper start. Strategy Builder turns point-and-click conditions into NinjaScript.

TradeStation

EasyLanguage: written for traders and reads close to plain English.

Where you can run it

NinjaTrader

Supported by most futures prop firms, usually through a Rithmic, Tradovate or CQG connection.

TradeStation

Few prop firms offer it, so it's mainly used with a TradeStation brokerage account.

Credit where it's due

Where each platform shines.

Where NinjaTrader shines

  • Futures first. The platform, the brokerage and the pricing are all built around futures traders, from micros up.
  • Prop firm friendly. If you want to trade a funded account, NinjaTrader is the platform most futures prop firms support.
  • Free to research. Charting, backtesting and simulated trading are free with no time limit, so you can build and test before you pay anything.
  • Pay once if you trade a lot. The Lifetime plan has the lowest commissions, which adds up for active futures traders.

Where TradeStation shines

  • One account for everything. Stocks, ETFs, options and futures sit side by side, which suits traders who don't only trade futures.
  • EasyLanguage. It's one of the easiest strategy languages to read and learn, and decades of EasyLanguage strategies and books are out there.
  • Scanning and portfolios. RadarScreen watches up to 1,000 symbols, and Portfolio Maestro (an add-on) backtests several strategies together.
  • A long track record. TradeStation has been a home for system traders for decades, with deep historical data built in.
Tested on both

One strategy, both platforms.

We built one breakout strategy in BreakoutOS, exported it as EasyLanguage and as NinjaScript, and backtested it on each platform. Both reproduced the BreakoutOS results closely.

BreakoutOS's own backtest had 409 trades and 57.5% winners. Small differences come from how each platform handles holidays and shortened sessions. Hypothetical backtest results, not live trading. Full results on the NinjaTrader and TradeStation pages.

What BreakoutOS adds to either platform.

NinjaTrader and TradeStation both test and run the strategy you give them. BreakoutOS does the jobs around that, and the strategy you build moves with you if you ever switch.

Before you build

Breakout Radar and Market Mapper show which markets and sessions break out cleanly, and Breakout Trading PRO builds and tests thousands of breakout strategies in minutes, then exports the one you pick as NinjaScript or EasyLanguage.

After the backtest

The Backtest Auditor checks whether a result beats a thousand strategies with the same DNA, MQ Portfolio Builder combines strategies into one portfolio, and the Strategy Health Monitor tells you when a live strategy drifts outside its normal range.

Common questions

NinjaTrader vs TradeStation questions.

Both trade futures well. NinjaTrader is built around them: its brokerage is futures-focused, most prop firms support it, and its Lifetime plan has the lowest commissions for active traders. TradeStation suits futures traders who also want stocks and options in the same account.
It depends on how much you trade. NinjaTrader is free for charting, backtesting and simulation, then charges commissions on one of three plans (Free, $99 a month, or $1,499 once). TradeStation's desktop platform is free with an account, and commissions depend on your account plan. Compare both at your own trading volume on their pricing pages.
For most traders, yes. EasyLanguage was designed for traders and reads close to plain English. NinjaScript is C#, so it has more power and a steeper start, though NinjaTrader's Strategy Builder lets you create simple strategies without code. BreakoutOS writes either one for you.
Rarely. Most futures prop firms connect through NinjaTrader, Tradovate or other Rithmic- and CQG-based platforms, and few offer TradeStation. Check your firm's platform list before you pay for an evaluation.
Partly. NinjaTrader's web and mobile apps work on a Mac, and the desktop platform runs in a Windows virtual machine. TradeStation's new TITAN X platform runs on Mac, but strategy backtesting is still in TradeStation 10, which is Windows only.
Yes. BreakoutOS exports every strategy as EasyLanguage and as NinjaScript. In our test, one NQ breakout strategy produced 409 trades in BreakoutOS and TradeStation and 410 in NinjaTrader (hypothetical backtests).
Both run automated strategies from code you write or import. NinjaTrader is the usual choice for automating futures, especially in prop firm accounts. TradeStation suits automating across stocks, options and futures from one account.
