MetaTrader 5 and NinjaTrader are both built for automated trading, and BreakoutOS exports strategies to both. MT5 is the forex and CFD trader's platform; NinjaTrader is built around futures. Here's an honest side-by-side.

The short answer

Which one should you use?

Choose MetaTrader 5 if...

  • You mainly trade forex or CFDs
  • You're taking a forex or CFD prop firm challenge
  • You want ready-made Expert Advisors from a built-in marketplace

Choose NinjaTrader if...

  • You mainly trade futures
  • You're taking, or planning, a futures prop firm evaluation
  • You'd rather pay once for a lifetime license and lower commissions
At a glance

Three key differences.

What you can trade

MetaTrader 5

Whatever your broker offers: mostly forex and CFDs, plus stocks and exchange futures at some brokers.

NinjaTrader

Built around futures: more than 100 contracts, including micro and crypto futures. Connect another broker for stocks or forex.

How you code a strategy

MetaTrader 5

MQL5, a C++-style language for Expert Advisors. The MQL5 Wizard builds simple EAs from ready-made modules.

NinjaTrader

NinjaScript (C#): a full programming language. Strategy Builder turns point-and-click conditions into NinjaScript.

Where you can run it

MetaTrader 5

Offered by brokers around the world, and used by most forex and CFD prop firms.

NinjaTrader

Supported by most futures prop firms, usually through a Rithmic, Tradovate or CQG connection.

Credit where it's due

Where each platform shines.

Where MetaTrader 5 shines

  • Forex and CFDs. Most forex and CFD brokers offer MT5, so you can usually keep your platform if you change broker.
  • Free platform. There's no license fee: MT5 is free to download, and your broker provides the account.
  • Real-tick testing. The Strategy Tester can replay your broker's real tick history, across several symbols in one test.
  • A marketplace built in. The MQL5 Market, copy-trading Signals and hosted VPS are all inside the platform.

Where NinjaTrader shines

  • Futures first. The platform, the brokerage and the pricing are all built around futures traders, from micros up.
  • Prop firm friendly. If you want to trade a funded account, NinjaTrader is the platform most futures prop firms support.
  • Free to research. Charting, backtesting and simulated trading are free with no time limit, so you can build and test before you pay anything.
  • Pay once if you trade a lot. The Lifetime plan has the lowest commissions, which adds up for active futures traders.
Tested on both

One strategy, both platforms.

We built one breakout strategy in BreakoutOS, exported it as an MQL5 Expert Advisor and as NinjaScript, and backtested it on each platform. Both reproduced the BreakoutOS results closely.

What BreakoutOS adds to either platform.

MetaTrader 5 and NinjaTrader both test and run the strategy you give them. BreakoutOS does the jobs around that, and the strategy you build moves with you if you ever switch.

Before you build

Breakout Radar and Market Mapper show which markets and sessions break out cleanly, and Breakout Trading PRO builds and tests thousands of breakout strategies in minutes, then exports the one you pick as MQL5 or NinjaScript.

After the backtest

The Backtest Auditor checks whether a result beats a thousand strategies with the same DNA, MQ Portfolio Builder combines strategies into one portfolio, and the Strategy Health Monitor tells you when a live strategy drifts outside its normal range.

Common questions

MetaTrader 5 vs NinjaTrader questions.

NinjaTrader. It's built around futures, with its own futures brokerage and support from most futures prop firms. MT5 can trade exchange futures through a few brokers, but it's mostly used for forex and CFDs.
MT5. Most forex and CFD brokers offer it, and most forex prop firms use it. NinjaTrader can trade spot forex through a connected broker, but its own brokerage is futures-focused.
MT5 itself is free; you pay your broker's spreads or commissions. NinjaTrader is free for charting, backtesting and simulation, then charges commissions on one of three plans (Free, $99 a month, or $1,499 once). The cheaper one depends on what and how much you trade.
They're similar. MQL5 is close to C++ and NinjaScript is C#, so both are full programming languages. Both platforms also have a no-code option: the MQL5 Wizard and NinjaTrader's Strategy Builder. BreakoutOS writes either one for you.
Forex and CFD prop firms mostly use MT5, and futures prop firms mostly support NinjaTrader. If you're in the US, check that an MT5 firm accepts US traders, as some have restricted them since 2024.
MT5 has an official Mac version, which runs through a bundled Wine layer. NinjaTrader's web and mobile apps work on a Mac, and the desktop platform runs in a Windows virtual machine.
Yes. BreakoutOS exports every strategy as an MQL5 Expert Advisor and as NinjaScript. In our test, one NQ breakout strategy produced 409 trades in BreakoutOS and MT5 and 410 in NinjaTrader (hypothetical backtests).
